A Delightful Interaction with a Wild Bird

...

Some of our local jays have become quite comfortable around me and Robb. I love how these two are checking each other out. (Sorry about that unflattering under-the-chin camera angle, Robb!)

Step down, please. Your peanut shards await. How do you like our work table? It's made of salvaged cabinet doors, and a wooden shipping crate we found in the crawlspace under our house.

There's something so insanely wonderful about being touched on the hand by a wild animal.

You can see the intelligence in those eyes. We're honored to have earned your trust, Western Scrub Jay.

Well, it's nice to know they're at least eating something other than your bees! :P

Yeah... Peanuts: the natural food of the wild corvid.

At least we're not feeding them candy, right?

You know they are only waiting to see if Robb moves. If he stays still for too long they will gang up on him and try to fly off with him into the sunset. Then how will you get tea to him when he's stuck in some giant bird nest?

Oh, how nice to have them be so used to you that they'll come to eat out of your hand.

We're having a blast watching all sorts of birds visit our platform and thistle feeders!

What's really amazing is that you had a camera around to catch the moment.

Uh, yeah, about that camera...

I'm on a sort of perpetual safari in my own back yard. The camera is never far from reach.

I'm such a nerd.

I'm assuming there were no members of the kitty tribe about during this, yes?

I find jays to be big bullies, you would not believe how mean they are to our poor Towhees. Then again, they are beautiful and how exciting that they come so close!

Gina -- Today, I was feeding a jay, and holding one of the feral cats in place with my foot. It's a non-stop animal-fest around here.

Mousie -- The jays are indeed bullies. But perhaps you could say that they "fiercely defend their territory." Mine are feeding little ones, and they're not afraid to get right in the a cat's face.

I find their feet feel really nice to the touch. Thank you for your invitation to view. I'm glad to have given you the inspiration to interact with these birds.
