Garden Porno, for those buried under the snow.

...

Today, after finishing the job of totally repainting the black floor that we painted a few days back (the paint never cured, it was a gummy mess of un-walkable badness), I got to work, digging up the bed that is going to be my larger vegetable garden.

Isn't that black soil beautiful? It's full of plump earthworms, and must be the result of decades of composted mulberry leaves and fruit.

I think I'm going to singlehandedly drive Annalisa and Robb's dad insane with these photos. Anyone who is sick of snow, and dying to get their hands dirty is welcome to come visit us in California. I could use some help, digging.

I'm digging out thousand of onion plants, which sort of kills me because I really think the flowers are pretty. I believe that around here, this plant is considered a major weed.

I'm pretty flexible about weeds. My definition of a weed, is "a plant that grows too easily." I find a lot of beauty in plants that other people work hard to eradicate. I'm not particularly interested in "perfect" lawns. I love the tough survivors of the plant kingdom. Nothing made me smile more in Baltimore than the blue chicory, poking through the cracks in the sidewalk.

I'm no fan of plants that strangle out their neighbors, but I tend to have a live-and-let-live policy until a plant proves itself to be a pest.

However, if I left all these onions in place, there's be no room for tomatoes, and that would be a tragedy.

I've got days of plant-removing to finish, before the plant-planting commences.

I think I'll start planting in March.

Well, actually, I have my cold-weather bed started. The radishes and peas have sprouted.

The cats are convinced I've made them the World's Bestest Litterbox, but never mind that.

You are a cruel, cruel woman...

(ties on another set of plastic bags onto her feet, shoves them in boots, and goes back out to chip at the bobsled run that is our set of steps)

...cruel.

Are you sure those are onions? It looks like the white variety of 'Lilly of the Nile' or Agapanthus to me.

Marm -- onions and lilies are close relatives, but the bulb form (and the *smell*) scream "onion."
