We STILL have a FOUR PAGE list of things to do to our house and yard and barn. Three years on, now!
Everyone we spoke to when we started said slow down, it will take longer than you think, and they were right. We worked on the place every day for 6 months and spent all our money. It was great, and exhausting.
We listened to a lot of old timers in our area, and discovered, that yes indeedy, we can get many, many, many things for free by being patient and looking for them locally. I suspect you can get free doorknobs, bee hives, even damaged cans of paint, by being patient. I also discovered people donate stuff to Habitat for Humanity, and if it is not a "standard" item... specific sized windows, for example, they sell it for VERY cheap to get rid of it.
Get ready for a happy and busy holiday and new year. I don't know why, but I am very hopeful for a new year. Having a house (and each other) tends to do that to people!
We won't be there for your open house, but have a good time!
