In the Dark

...

Robb and I spent a lovely, if dark, evening observing an extended Earth Hour. We turned off the lights, and many of our plug-in electronics, and had dinner by candle light. We enjoyed some home brewed beer, a meal of locally grown organic veggies, and a wide-ranging conversation.

We both try to do our part to reduce the burden we place on Earth's resources. All of our fruit and vegetables come from a local family-owned organic farm. Robb and I are well suited in our lifestyle. Without ever saying it out loud, we've chosen to live simply and frugally. We've never been interested in owning the newest appliance or the sporting the flashiest stuff. Even without all that, we have a rich, full life.

San Francisco
also participated in Earth Hour last night, turning off non-essential lights in much of the city. Read about it, here.

Liam and I were trying to make it home in enough time to participate ourselves...ironically probably spewing more carbons into the air on the drive back from Tennessee than we ought to have in our attempt! He suggested that we pick an hour to do this every week. I think it's a great idea!

I also think that it's so easy to get caught up in some sort of deprivation-schema living in the United States -- we are constantly bombarded by messages designed to make us yearn for the latest thing you don't have. I think the closer you get to nature, the more you realize that it's all poor compensation for what really constitutes a rich life -- something to love, something to create, and something that gives you hope.

You guys have long been the richest people I know and an inspiration.

I was in the dark about being in the dark. Spent the time (4 days now) with a wonderful stomach virus, thank you, and probably needed the lights on to find the toilet. Sorry about this!

File this one under "too much information!"

Alas! I heard about this about three hours AFTER it occurred. I LOVE the idea of having a weekly "lights-out" hour. What a great time to enjoy each other's company and catch up over candle light...

We love when summer storms knock out our power. We go sit on our porch with some candles burning, and Jason plays his guitar. WE almost always attract a neighbor or two...who just want to sit and listen...or talk.

Now with a little one on the way, this idea seemseven more appealing...family time.
