Forget Santa. I want a visit from the Green Fairy!

...

Everyone needs a goal, not matter how silly or frivolous. Robb has been dreaming of being well enough to go snorkeling in Kauai again. I'm not recovering from anything as serious as Robb's spinal cord injury, but I realize that I've been imagining the day when I put Hepatitis behind me, and am allowed to have a drink again.

And I know exactly what I'll have to celebrate.

Robb and I had been amusing ourselves by playing a torturous game of Forbidden Food Pairings. We would think up all the things that -- due to the compromised state of my liver -- I'm not supposed to ingest right now, and imagine how enjoyable they could be. Chile Rellenos and a nice salt-rimmed margarita. Vegetable Tempura and Sapporo. Basically anything deep fried with a nice cold beer. You get the picture.

Those all have their charms, but what I'm really fantasizing about is a perfectly served glass of newly legalized and locally-produced Absinthe.

Absinthe, The Green Fairy...

..tastes like licorice, or Pastis, only more complex.

...has a wicked -- if ill-deserved -- past.

...was the subject of all sorts of Nineteenth Century artworks.

...inspired me to make the above rubber-stamp print, and an accompanying teeny-tiny art book.

...knocked my friend Drew face-down on the floor of the Mount Royal Tavern. That's the stuff of legends.

Oh yeah! I want some of that action.

It goes on sale on Friday. I wonder if I have time to run all the way to Alameda on my lunch hour?

Later: It is not going to be a Chartreuse Christmas, this year. Robb went by the distillery, hoping to buy a bottle of Absinthe, and hundreds of people were lined up outside the building.

Robb's not able to stand in line for hours, but that's okay, because at the moment I'm not supposed to drink alcohol.

Get DeniseRows to help you out. She lives in Alameda now. Sorry for volunteering you Denise, but PA is too far away to help out Lisa in her quest. Larva Lady/ZZ

I have been fascinated by the Green Fairy ever since I first saw your amazing stamp, Lisa.

I'd love to share a glass with you, but alas I'm on the other side of the country.

A worthy goal, I think. Reckless pursuit of foolish pleasures is something I think you've had too little of lately. Marry Christmas to you, and may the new year bring you more fun and fewer challenges.

Hm...

Buying books is forbidden to us for this year, since we have so many already the house is threatening to tip over!

When I think of "the green fairy" I think of gay leprachauns.

Hope you guys are feeling ok, it's down to 14 degrees here at night.

Ah the Green Fairy...miss me some of that as well. It nice not having to get it from overseas now. I always imaging i'm drinking it as I down the green NyQuil. Personally I think its the same, they just remove the wormwood and add pseudoephedrine.

Shucks, and I was hoping to visit them on my trip up to SF after Christmas. Ah well.

We went by Hangar One yesterday also, observed the line, and dashed right out of there! Actually, we anticipated the line as going to be extensive, but wanted to check it out anyway. There were a bunch of people there in para-military outfits & berets with little martini glass patches stitched to their arms - not sure who they were, but were greatly amused. I definitely thought of your amazing Absinthe stamp - think the folks at Hangar One would host it as an "inside" letterbox?

I've always been curious about Absinthe. Will you pour it over a sugar spoon? I don't think I will buy a bottle, though 'cause I don't like the taste of licorice. I love the history, though.
