Feeling Crochety

...

After a lengthy weekend, spent sick on the couch, I've got two bits of insight.

First: I'm the World's Slowest Crochet-er.

And Second:  Julian Fellowes (creator of Downton Abbey) must have an amazing lawyer, because he shamelessly plagiarized the plot points of Upstairs Downstairs.  I'm not talking about the larger social issues, but about very specific story lines.  The unrequited and fatal love affair between a naive kitchen maid and a footman named William? Yup. Right there. And while the maid in the original series wasn't named Daisy, the entire cast of servants was belting out exactly that name, as they all bellowed Bicycle Built for Two during the discover of the death.  Not convinced?  What if I told you there was a story about a gay footman who carries on an affair with a nobleman who is pretending to woo the daughter of the house?  Or how about the fact that the unethical servant of the house is named Thomas? What about the suffragist daughter, shocking the family with her bohemian wardrobe and political views? Or how about the housemaid who gets knocked up by a member of the aristocracy, and then turned out into the streets?  Or how about the fact that the actress who plays the main housemaid Anna looks *stunningly* like the actress who played the main housemaid in Upstairs Downstairs, and who was incidentally one the the creators of the original show?  Did Julian Fellowes seriously think that he was the only person ever to watch Upstairs Downstairs? As I said, he must have one hell of a good lawyer.

The sweater is chugging along. I finished the patterned knitting, and have been stabilizing the parts I'm going to cut with crochet.

It looks kind of great, tossed over our living room chair.  Remarkable how something so loud and patterned can blend right in.

No matter how quick you are at crochet, surface crochet is always a slow and agonizing process. I've been knitting six years, and crocheting thirty-eight, and I'm still very slow, awkward, and horrible at surface crochet.

I've been watching Downton Abbey. I had only seen a few episodes of the newer version of Upstairs, Downstairs, so do not have that insight, now I will have to check out the original series. I am on a big British show kick atm. :)

Crochet is very forgiving; so I'm much quicker at it than knitting.
And I must say...I'm in love with your living room. **swooning**. Fireplace...spinning wheel...Handmade needlework tossed artfully over a chair...
