Maurice Sendak

...

I cannot recall a time in my life when I did not admire Maurice Sendak. His books were among the very first I read, and all these years later, I can recall the cadence to his words.

His sense of chaos and his artistry, his sweetness and sadness, these all influenced me deeply.  I loved his ferocious spirit, and the unrepentant badness of his characters.

I had the very good fortune to work on a couple of his theater pieces.  I have an autographed thank you note from Mr, Sendak (somewhere).  I never met the man, because he suffered from chronic back pain and was unable to travel.

Thank you, Mister Sendak, for all you brought us.  The world is a better place, because of what you shared with us.

My son told me last night. I never read Sendak until read to my son. We have many books on the shelf that are now passed to my daughter. Feels like losing a friend.

"Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it. I answer all my children’s letters — sometimes very hastily — but this one I lingered over. I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, “Dear Jim: I loved your card.” Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.” That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it.”
