Earthquake

...

Last night, around 3:30 in the morning, I woke up very confused.  Something was going on -- our windows were rattling, and I was overcome with a strange feeling that I could not name.  I imagine there were cartoon question marks hanging in the air over my head.  I was dead asleep, and could not access the part of my brain that produces language.  Robb had been awake a little bit longer and informed me that we were experiencing an earthquake.  By the time he said those words, it was all over, and I promptly fell back to sleep.

This was apparently a 6.0 magnitude earthquake.

That's big.

Thankfully, Robb and I spent a good deal of money when we first bought our house, getting the foundations up to current earthquake standards.

The area around the quake was not so lucky.

Merchandise was knocked off the shelves in American Canyon, which was the epicenter.  (In other news, you can buy wine at the Walmart in California.)

Brick buildings -- which do not "flex" during quakes -- were damaged.

This just looks like a photo from the X-Men.

Napa is, famously, the center of wine-making in California.  Not the wine!  Not the wine! Nooooooooo!

I think that we're lucky that the quake happened in the middle of the night, so that few people were out on the streets when all that masonry fell.

Northern Californians, what was your experience?

All of my friends are ok so far, I haven't heard from a few at the epicenter. I know one woman in Napa had every drawer open and contents spilled on the floor as well as most furniture overturned. So glad you are all ok.

We're father away in SJ (about 67 mi as the crow flies), so it was just enough to wake my husband & me up, but not much more (my 13 yo son slept through it).

I can't imagine what that was like.

I probably would have slept through the whole thing if our rattly 1950s windows hadn't made so much noise.

I live in Napa,I don't know at what point of the earthquake I woke up, but my bed was jumping at least a foot. It just kept going and going... Things on my east and west walls on shelves were all over my floor. I was a lucky one that was only without power for 3 hours, my parents just got power a few hours ago. I have only seen downtown on the news, but they have us teachers going to the schools tomorrow to assess our classrooms and clean up without kids. Streets have buckled in places, and I have no idea how long it will take us to get back to normal. By far the scariest earthquake I have experienced- and I remember 89 (Of course living in the north bay all I has to go on for major damage was the news)

All previous joking aside, I'm glad you're okay. That must have been a frightening and bizarre experience.

Laughter helps with healing, right? We are lucky that it happened so early and no one was hit with falling bricks.

I was in La Honda at a Tai Chi camp, and we felt it there. I was dead asleep in my camp bunk, and thought the dog (whom I left at home) was trying to climb into bed with me, lol. My bunk mates report that I rolled over and said really loudly, "It's not happening, Bella! Go lay down!" and went back to sleep...
