Chicken Spa

...

Our bossiest hen, Anne Elliott, is not feeling well.  She is not terrorizing her flock mates.  Although she is still monopolizing the preferred nest box, much to the consternation of all the other girls, she is not laying eggs. She isn't particularly interested in food, and isn't pooping much.

Robb and I are worried that she might be egg-bound, and so we tried the treatment suggested for just about every chicken malady.  A nice warm bath.

Anne Elliott was not impressed.

Today is our mostly-annual Egg-Stravaganza which means that Robb and I are busy all day.  If Anne Elliott doesn't improve, we'll be seeking medical care.

Do any of our blog readers have advice on this subject?  How does one do a hen examination, anyway?

When my girls would get eggbound they wouldn't move around much. I could see their vent pulsing sometimes when they couldn't expel the egg. Their bum might get really messy, especially if they were laying soft eggs and they had broken inside them. I would bathe my girl in the bathtub and she would completely relax and lie her head against my arm. I would clean her bum with my other hand and with her being relaxed I could "examine" her vent with my hand and help her expel the broken shell. I think being in the tub, away from distractions, helped her relax. HTH
I know nothing about keeping hens...but she is beautiful. I hope she gets better and is able to expel that egg soon!

If you can feel a lump or mass in her abdomen, that strongly suggests egg binding. I'm not sure what you can do beyond what you have been doing, if you can't see/feel the egg in her vent. Sometimes the egg gets stuck near the vent, and then you can lubricate your fingers and the egg and help get it out.

She could just be preparing to go broody. My hens do the same thing. Is she trying to nest at all? How frequently does she poo? When she does, are they huge and really stinky? If so, sounds like she's preparing to hatch some eggs!
