Trespassing and Killing

Last spring, Robb and I set up a beehive at our friend Allie's house. She provided space in her beautiful garden, and we gave her bees and a hive. We'd stop by from time to time to hang out and tend the bees.

This seemed like a perfect arrangement.

Until yesterday, when someone came into Allie's yard, and sprayed insecticide all over her hive, killing thousands of bees. Given that Allie has a six-foot-tall fence, it's clear that the culprit was not some random by-passer. The person who killed Allie's bees must have been an immediate neighbor, who could see the hive from a second-floor window.

If this neighbor had an issue with Allie keeping bees, they could have spoken to her. They could have called someone from Animal Control. Instead they chose a "solution" that was both sneaky and cowardly. This makes me crazy. I feel terrible for Allie, because this will surely sour her relations with her neighbors.

Imagine if Allie had a dog that the neighbor was afraid of. Would the neighbor be justified in sneaking into Allie's yard, and shooting her dog?

I'll be going over to Allie's house after work to see if anything can be done to save the remaining bees.

Sometime I really hate humans.

I'd definitely file a report, even if it's just for trespassing. Then I'd consider getting a dog. A big dog. This is completely unacceptable! Right up there with throwing antifreeze-soaked dog food over the fence in my book. That certain someone needs to recognize there are consequences for such actions. I really loathe humans sometimes. I hope something can be salvaged. Keep us posted.

What a horrible thing for someone to do. I hope the hive can be saved, and then I'd work on booby-trapping the entire yard.

I'm not sure why people think it's excusable to do that sort of thing. I'm fairly sure a neighbor poisoned my cat years ago as well. Maybe he pooped in their yard (no one ever said a word to me), but I would gladly have made an effort to keep him inside had I know his life was in danger.

I hope you find some salvagable bees in there. And YES on the police report!

Yes I would file a police report. People who take the law into their own hands are breaking the law. What happens next time there's a problem? What measures will their idiot measure take and who will it harm? Totally unacceptable.

Awww... this is awful... these bees are not aggressive and provide such a wonderful service to mankind! I had a neighbor that had a couple of hives... he had a swarm that ended up on my front porch for a while. I called him...all ended well and there wasn't even one sting! Live together...people and nature!!!

That is so so horrible. My neighbor keeps bees. We see them buzzing around all the time and even though it's not my "thing," we welcome his hive in the neighborhood.

As a person with two hives, living next to neighbors with bee sting allergies, I would suggest to everyone to talk to your neighbors about the bees. Try to show them that they are beneficial, and generally harmless if treated respectfully. It also helps to give honey gifts at Christmas! That said, what a horrid thing to do to a) the bees, and b) your friend. I don't know about you, but I get somewhat emotionally attached to my bee colonies!

Oh my gosh - that is simply appalling! How could someone do that? They are simply sly selfish cowards. I'd set up a webcam and bring in another hive. It would be so good to catch the perpetrator. I hope the law would have some form of fine/punishment.

It's the way so many arrogant, ignorant rednecks and social predators feel perfectly fine in harming and killing animals and children, but feel compelled to behave around adults. Not exactly cowards, but genuinely worthless people who get their jollies by exacting their power over the small and helpless. Anyone who would kill a neighbour's pets would likely do terrible things to a child or even a woman. This schmuck probably pulls the wings off flies and tortures squirrels for fun. Freak.

I'm equally appalled by the blatant racism on the above comment, and disappointed that you let it remain. Did the commenter see the bee killer?
No reason to jump to conclusions.
I hope a police report is filed. Not so sure about putting an innocent dog in yard...I'd go with cameras instead.

I do admire that your friend is willing and able to talk to her neighbours about this. Makes me see RED!! But kindness and communication promises a better future for the surviving bees.
