Snapshots from a California Garden

...

Just outside our back door is a beautiful dwarf lemon tree. We don't know what variety we've got, but we love it. The fruits ripen to a beautiful globe shape, and I think they have an almost peppery fragrance. The fruits are ripening, just now. I really enjoyed having an endless supply of lemons when I was sick with laryngitis, a few weeks ago.

Citrus are incredible trees, because they simultaneously have fully ripe fruits fruits and brand-new flowers on their branches. The flowers have an intoxicating scent, that seems significantly more fragrant after the sun goes down.

If even half of the flowers on this tree develop into lemons, we're going to be in Citrus Heaven next year.

Oh I miss our tree in the old house. It was an orange tree, possibly tangerines. They were wonderful. We had so many, we'd let the neighbors come over with their bins to fill them up, and we'd mail them as gifts for Christmas.

I don't know if you have to thin a lemon tree to get good lemons, like you have to for a walnut and an apple tree. Better look it up. I just remember the old Civil war saying " A dog, a woman and a walnut tree, the more you beat them, the better they be." ICK.....

If you have to trim off extra branches on that lemon tree, you may get a magnificent crop this year.

We had to trim back my Dad's old concord grape vine about 80%, 2 years in a row, and now we get tip top grapes in the fall!

We are about to get 2 inches of rain tonight. With the ground frozen like it is- the water has only one place to go... straight into our basement. Grrr.

was linked here from Atlas Quest...I think you might have a Meyer Lemon tree, based on the picture and the way you describe them tasting. We had one in our front yard in Berkeley when we first moved out to CA.

I don't think our lemon is as sweet as a Meyer.

(But we did get a Meyer as a gift!)
