Four Years

...

It hardly seems appropriate to "celebrate" the anniversary of Robb's spinal cord injury. I mean, what are we supposed to do: light candles on our cupcakes, or break open a bottle of bubbly?

We could take a hard look at how far Robb's condition has improved since he broke his back, but honestly, we do that pretty much every day.

The thing that's been rattling around inside my brain today is how many of our blog readers never knew us, before the accident. I have to say, I still have a hard time adjusting to the ratio of friends who knew us before Robb was paralyzed, versus those who met us since that time.

But, rather than being weirded out, why don't we celebrate all of the our old friends, and all the people who have come into our lives since that day, four years ago?

Boy, I can relate to that! In some cases it's a real surprise who falls away after a life-changing event.

I fall into the category of "old friend", I know, but I'm not going anywhere... clink.

Wow, Lisa... I know what you mean about the strangeness of marking this kind of milestone. Our cultural habits of marking anniversaries tend to fall into either the "woo hoo!" or "moment of silence" category, neither of which really honors the complexity of this moment. Of any moment in a human life, if we're honest about it. What is the right thing to say? Who knows? I'll keep thinking about it...meanwhile, here's to you and Robb and your amazing and ongoing journey. *clink*

You have come a long way from where you were four years ago.

Treat yourselves to some cake. Might as well make it an anniversary to mark in a nice way, rather than a bad one.

Not everyone could go through what you guys have and still keep your sense of humor- celebrate THAT!

Four years is definitely time to celebrate the strength of your relationship & the power of positive thinking & actions. You are both so inspirational & whenever I have to go through another procedure I always think of both of you. It helps me when I'm feeling down & inspires me to keep moving when I've had another setback.
