A hive of activity

...

We've been thinking and planning for a backyard beehive this spring. Here's a very inspirational little slideshow we just came across.

That is so cool! Something else for me to look for next time I'm in DC.

Another Blogger I'm in touch with has gotten into beekeeping, and started a website on the subject of keeping bees in the city (she's in Vancouver).

Now you've got me researching beekeeping. I really don't need another hobby but it looks fascinating. I may have to take a class. :-)

I would love to have bees, but we don't have the space and I don't have much support from the family. You should see the beehive that the Eglu people have designed. Totally amazing!

Liam's school just started keeping bees and he was shown today how to "feed" them! He tells me that the bees they have now are from "Eastern Europe and Russia". I'm SERIOUSLY considering trying to convince my landlord to let us keep some here this Spring; can't imagine anything cooler! What kinds of resources are you guys consulting in your preparations? (Besides all those fabulous left coast lectures and seminars and such, of course.) I'll be checking out ArtSparkers's link in the meantime!

Gina -- bees are tricky, because besides stinging, they can get all sorts of really disgusting diseases and parasites.

I've been dreaming of bees for years and years, and I'm still not 100% certain that having them is a good idea.

You may want to do what I've been doing, and inviting yourself over to bee-keeper's houses, to see the operation in person.

Before you do that, here's a simple test. Does the following phrase freak you out?

THERE ARE FIVE THOUSAND BEES IN MY BACK YARD.

Hey there- we got our first good real cold freeze last night. Everything is frosted looking and very crunchy. If I had bees here now I would bee (!) asking you to knit them some little sweaters! They would request something NOT colored in black and gold, however- they would like a change of color and pattern, please! Dots would be nice.

WE had insullation put in for the first time ever in parts of the house, and it seems to have helped a lot. I'm going to go out now and buy stock in spray foam insullation, cause that stuff rocks. You should use it in your place- its great for old houses.

Our new neighbors up the street bought a terribly beat up old house and are trying to fix it up. Its a good thing they are not trying to live in it as they fix it, as I can see sunlight straight through the four foot holes in their walls when I drive by. It was considered a steal at $63,000 and 4 acres.
