A Moving Experience

...

Robb and I stayed up way too late last night, packing (Robb) and re-plastering and painting the front bedroom (me). We got up bright and early, to meet the movers. While we were waiting, I took Linguine over to the house, so that she wouldn't be underfoot.

And there were no movers.

Robb left phone messages and emails.

I bought shower curtains.

And there were no movers.

Finally, they called with all sorts of really lame excuses. There was another client named Robert. Their phone wasn't capturing our phone number.

The fact is that they forgot about us, and then they didn't admit their mistake.

Seven hours later than we expected, we had movers.

Tired movers who hadn't planned on doing our gigantic move. The workers were really sweet, even though it was raining, and they were clearly exhausted. Linguine didn't run away, and she wasn't particularly traumatized. I didn't get lunch or dinner. We had to miss the welcome-to-the-neighborhood party that was thrown in our honor.

Thanks goodness the building contractors finished rebuilding our garage, and getting a roof installed. It's still raining.

Even though almost everything is in boxes, it's already clear that our things are going to look great in this adorable little house.

And now I'm going to say it: I never want to repeat this day. I want to stay here a long, long time.

No matter how smoothly moving goes for me (and the last time was the smoothest - thanks folks!) I always want it to be the last move for a long long time. And then I have to pick up and move again.
But YAY! I'm glad you're in. It must be such a relief. I hope you two and Linguini are very happy in your new home.

Congratulations, but sorry it was harder (more stressful) than it had to be.

Post pictures when you can.

I am laughing and groaning for you at the same time! That's hard to make me do...

It reminds me of the time Gary and I moved to Michigan from B-more on Labor Day and there was NO truck for us to use- even though we rented and reserved it for that day, and they had cashed our check. We had 10 gracious and energized people at our apartment to help us move, yet hours later...we were ALL moved into the parking spots at the back of the building, STILL waiting for a truck that never showed up. THEN it started raining. Plastic tarps came out...So did the bums on weird illegal substances- who started picking thru our boxed-up stuff waiting for pick-up. I started yelling. Then Baltimore city's finest cops showed up. And started picking thru our stuff as well. I never knew so many people were interested in scratched up furniture I had saved from back alleys on bulk trash day. GRRR. Now that I think of it, a lot of my life consists of me yelling. As far as I can tell, It doesnt make things go any easier. On anybody.

Then our GREAT friend RON Campbell who can literally move heavan and earth, did so for us. He is a master of phone wrangling, and we put him on, and about 2 hours later and 30 referrals to "Go on, Let me speak to your manager, I know you don't want to be bothered by my problem"- HE GOT THE TRUCK. I am still blurry about his successful verbal thrust and parries, but he got 'er done.

What a crazy day that was. Sounds a lot like yours. You find inner reserves of pissed-off-ed-ness you didnt have. I'm sure some of my grey hair dates back to various moving days we have had. Having a very heavy printing press to move does NOT help. We finally got the truck packed in the dark, got in and drove for 1 hour- then stopped and got a motel room. That was a weird day.

I am so sorry you had to go through what you guys did. It seems a letter-writing rant is in your future- you should at least get half off what you paid back, if not more.

Your new neighbors sound awesome- we were greeted to our new home with the strong smell of our neighbor's cow feces. And to us, it smelled like victory!

I shudder when Karma gets ahold of your moving company. Moving is one of the most stressful parts of your life- arent you glad the worst part of it is over!

PS- Ron Campbell now lives with his wife and 3 kids in Timonium, Md, and as far as I know he is still an awesome guy. ;)

I think I've said that about 35 times. But don't worry, I'm sure you're more stable than I am!

Laughing hard enough to snort iced tea through my nose! When I moved into this house about 14 years ago, I had a GREAT moving company. However, the previous owner's company was supposed to move them out days before our move in. We arrived with two trucks from the old house...only to find the movers ON THE DAY WE WERE TO MOVE IN...just starting to move them out!!!! Argh! Their stuff was going out the garage at the same time our stuff was being brought in through the front door!

Moving is the worst. At least the worst of it is over! Glad to hear Linguine is doing well. It only took our cats four days to get fully acclimated. :)

"Mercury is retrograde so schedules might be off a bit with the movers as well as other things. Try not to sweat it."

This was my comment a few days ago when you were stressing about not being ready for the movers. When Mercury is in a backward motion you can rely on only one thing; schedules will be messed up.

Glad everything ended up OK though. We look forward to every post!

not quite democratic?
peaches and cream only?
This, "hooray for us!" started out as a way to raise funds. I saw it, and it sounds like a farce. You'll delete this too; why even bother writing anything that doesn't paint you both as heroes? You aren't in my eyes. There are skeletons, not just broken, but thrown by the wayside.
