The Perils of Auto-Pilot

...

Robb goes out cycling several times a week. Studies seem to indicate that prolonged steady cyclical exercise contributes to neural regeneration in patients with spinal cord injuries. Also, cycling is a great source of aerobic exercise for Robb, who can't exactly go jogging. While Robb still cannot walk any great distances, due to the paralysis of his feet and legs, he often rides twenty miles at a stretch.

Yesterday, he was out on the trike, and his back was hurting. He opted to "push through" the pain, which sounds like a good idea, but probably wasn't. When I got home from work, Robb was in miserable discomfort. Usually, he finds relief from his back pain when he lays down. But that wasn't working last night. He ended up taking some pain pills, which eventually masked his discomfort.

The problem with some of these pills is how much they knock Robb out.

I, on the other hand, have no excuse for my groggy state.

I got up this morning, a little bit before my alarm clock was due to go off. I stumbled into the kitchen to make myself a cup of coffee, with Linguine at my heels. We make cappuccino at our house, so while the espresso was brewing, I poured my milk. I realized that the sugar bowl was getting low, and grabbed the bag of sugar off the shelf to refill bowl.

But somehow my brain wasn't fully engaged, and I dumped a sackful of sugar into my mug of milk.

Later, I was sitting in the living room, drinking coffee, eating fresh-baked bread (thanks Robb!) and reading the news headlines. Linguine had gone back to the bedroom to snuggle with Robb. There was an annoying high-pitched beeping noise, nagging in the background. Birds were singing. I could hear my neighbors going through their morning routines. And that irritating beeping noise. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Wow, that certainly was annoying. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.

Finally, my brain kicked in, recognizing this incessant sound as my alarm clock. I raced into the bedroom, to turn it off.

Robb, drugged to the eyeballs, slept through the whole thing.

How's Robb

But the picture of Linguine with the foam is so cute! My bird (a white parakeet) - who lives at home with my parents - absolutely loves the sound of my dad's cappuccino machine. She'll go absolutely nuts, start chirping like crazy. Then she'll sit on my dad's head, or arm, or the edge of the cup while he drinks it. One time, she went in to get the foam at the bottom of the mug and fell in completely!

This reminds me of a story I just heard.

An older gentleman went outside to get his mail. He came inside, read it, and put away his things. As he went thru his day in his house, he kept hearing this SONG over and over and OVER AND OVER. It got to the point that has actually called the police to complain about his noisy neighbors that keep playing the same song repeatedly, over and over and making him nuts. The cops showed up and searched the area, no doubt thinking one of the neighbors had passed away that day or something.

After searching everyone around, the police informed the irate caller that the source of the song was his own musical "singing card" that he had received that day in the mail, and placed on his window sill. Every time the breeze would blow, the card would open slightly, triggering the battery operated song to play.

I like that story, mostly because I cant believe it wasnt ME as the featured zombified person of the day.

Good luck to you with all that sugar in your system. Your heart rate will probably slow down in the next month or so. Tell Robb to enjoy the bike riding- It's hard to stay inside on those days of good weather.
