Our Beautiful Bay

...

This week's fuel oil spill is truly a disaster. It seems that even after the birds are scrubbed and globs of goo are scooped off the beaches, the damage to the Bay's ecosystems will persist. The oil, which leaked out when a container ship hit the Bay Bridge, has spread through the Golden Gate and into the Pacific Ocean. News reports say that the spill has traveled fifteen miles up the coast already. Oil that is not scooped up by skimmers will sink to the bottom on the bay or foul wetlands, and damage the delicate web of life that exists at the boundary between land and sea.

By way of comparison, this is how this bird should look.

Yikes. I don't know what to say other than I hope it can get as fixed as possible. I know it wasn't exactly a balanced, healthy ecosystem to begin with.

I heard this on the news yesterday and the first thing I thought of was you and Robb. I hope Guv Arnold gets on this and pushes for a thorough cleanup. This is the chance to make that area pristine....

I remember seeing a story on tv once about a guy who went around to barber shops and hair salons, collected all the human hair he could get his hands on and sewed them into strips of cheap old bedsheets so it looked like a big long peice of hose. He then went to a beach and watched his hair/cloth ose soak up and absorb every bit of oil. he simply acted upon what everyone else saw as well and had never put two and two together.

Hair and feathers absorb the oil better than anything else. He figured as long as the oil went onto his homecrafted hose, it stayed off of other areas. I have to admit, it worked completely well at surrounding oil slicks while on the water, and preventing further spread, yet I am unaware if it actually could be used to remove the oil from areas already coated.

Good luck to you guys in having to deal with this mess.
