"Only the Toes Knows"
...
When I first met Robb, he and I stayed up way too late watching his recordings of an odd television series called Wiseguy. This show featured a young Kevin Spacey, playing an unhinged drug-addled crime lord named Mel Profitt. Kevin Spacey's character was utterly fascinating. Not only was he paranoid, and way, way, way too involved with his sister, he was convinced that he could pick up psychic (or perhaps psychotic) messages through his toes. In moments of great stress (or when he was injecting drugs between his toes), he would creepily intone, "Only the toes knows."
We loved this.
Yesterday, Robb had his swollen bruised little toe x-rayed, and it turns out that the toe is not, in fact, broken. If he could feel it, that angry looking purple and yellow toe would probably hurt terribly.
But as it is, the toe is only sending visual cues. ("Look at me! I'm the wrong size and the wrong colors!") Clearly, Robb needs to be careful to not re-injure this toe, and to not smash up the other parts of his body that have no sensation.
He was trying to describe the experience of the x-ray, which he found really odd, indeed. The technician needed to position his toe on the bed, and was being very careful not to hurt Robb. Robb kept assuring the tech that he really couldn't feel anything. We guess the Robb's toes is pretty tender, or the tech got a little rough, because despite the fact that he doesn't normally have sensation in this toe, Robb did feel something.
The feeling wasn't pain. It was just .... weird. Robb was unable to name the sensation, when attempting to describe it to me last night.
Robb thinks that while the neural messages aren't getting all the way to his brain, there is some information flowing out of his feet. Pain, he figures, is the body's way of saying, "Pay attention!" And these peculiar, indescribable sensations must be the same sort of message.
What's all this about?
Only the toes knows.
Today's photo is my view out window, as I'm writing this morning's blog. Reminds me of a line from a song, "one misty, moisty morning, when cloudy was the weather..."

i was thinking about talking to you about craft stuff, perhaps proposing another craft gathering... i'll ping you after your trip.
Robb, take care of those toes!
Let's get together and make a crafty mess again when I get back.
