In an attempt to be more ecologically responsible, I recently bought a bag of corn-based cat litter. I had read an alarming article on the down-sides of clay-based clumping cat litter, and wanted to try some alternatives.

Cat litter manufacturers advise you to only add a small amount of new product to your cats' boxes, so that the cats don't freak out and reject the new stuff. Seems like good advice, right?

About an hour after scooping out the cat box and mixing in the new corn litter, we heard a strange sound. Could it be? No....that would be too horrible for words....

Sure enough, there was our own Mister Firdusi with his face in the litterbox, happily munching away. Thankfully, a lot of yelling on my part made him lose interest, and we didn't have to rush him to the veterinarians for emergency stomach surgery.

Oh, my... is this a normal reaction for a cat to have to this type of litter??? I'm trying not to laugh too hard, but I can't help but picture the look on your face when you realized the awful truth!

A lot of cat foods contain corn, so the corn litter may smell familiar? We have tried the pine pellets variety...with mixed review. They disintegrate when wet and the particles clump together. One of our cats is a texture slut (and VERY picky about his litterbox), so the pellet form didn't appeal to him at all.

Good luck finding a litter that works for you, your cats and the earth!

I just read an article today about clumping litter being a hazard for cats--that it was an urban legend! Supposedly, if ingested, it absorbes all thier 'juices' --quite horrible surely. It did caution that dogs often go for it and you need to be wary of that but cats seem to know what it's for. (So, they ARE smarter than canines!)

Oh, and you have to watch that stuff for pantry moths too... My last bag was infested and I'm still finding those suckers everywhere...

Well, clumping litter is VERY bad for rabbits, but even my bunnies never ATE the corncobb stuff! That boy is a walking stomach! If he keeps it up try the "yesterday's news" paper pellet stuff made by purina. It's way more absorbent and has Rusty's seal of approval.

Kitties love corn! We have a cat that use to turn the trash can over whenever we threw away a corn cob! (He also loved sourdough bread and would growl if you tried to take it away from him...)

Yeah...I don't know what I was thinking....

I've never had a car who wouldn't pull corn cobs out of the trash (and I don't even use butter on my corn)!
