Robb was at the pool yesterday, same as every single Monday, Wednesday or Friday. And so was half of Berkeley. The place was packed.

Robb speculates that this was the pre-Thanksgiving, doing-a-little-exercise-in-advance-of-gorging-one's-self-on-Thursday crowd.

I wonder. Does it work that way?

I don't know if it actually does any good, but I'm sure it can't hurt, and if nothing else it helps people assuage guilt and enjoy the holiday a bit more.

I can attest to the same thing happening in January. I swim at our local pool a few mornings a week. For ten years there's been the core group of about a dozen of us. Each New Year there are always half a dozen "Resolutes" that join us for a week or two, even three, but who invariably decide that getting up at 5:15am is not for them.

Some days I know how they feel!

Its right up there with the people that order the super bacon cheeseburger, extra fries and a DIET coke!

AG: It's the same at our pool. A lifeguard told me that last year, on New Year's Day, during a session which normally has two dozen people, one hundred and twelve people showed up. It was back to normal in a week.
