Your Mileage May Vary

Light-- Speed Limit: 700 million mph
Sound-- Speed Limit: 700 mph

Peregrin Falcon-- Speed Limit: 200 mph

Asiatic Cheetah-- Speed Limit: 70 mph

Homo Sapiens (Olympianus)-- Speed Limit: 25 mph

Robb Bauer-- Speed Limit: 2.5 mph

Yesterday,in physical therapy, I told my therapist that on a previous day I had gotten up to about two miles an hour on the treadmill at the rehab center. I've noticed that when you say things like this to her she gets this crazy look in her eye. She seems to be thinking, "Oh, yeah? You wanna race?"
This was in fact pretty close to what she really had in mind.

Within a few minutes, I was back on that treadmill and she was zooming it up to 2.5 mph. (OK, this may not sound like much but when I first got on a treadmill about two weeks ago, I only managed about 1.2 mph with difficulty.) The big difference? I'm just taking longer strides. We worked quite a bit on stretching and preparing me to take bigger steps and it really paid off.

So how do I know that this is the current speed limit? Last night and most of the day today I was completely wiped out. I had planned on going out for a walk today but as I slowly and painfully climbed the stairs this morning after answering the front door, I realized that this was a day to lay low and recuperate. After all, I've got to get back on that treadmill tomorrow.

Just act as if you are being chased by zombies- they can only make it up to 2 miles per hour, so I think you guys are now officially safe from them.

Actually, I think that only will work if Robb is being chased by zombies on a treadmill....

Robbo- here's the deal straight from the Master M. Paul Petzoldt (who founded NOLS and did his time on the 10thn Mountain)- he combined necessity with Buddist/Yoga breathing and came up with rhythmatic breathing- sounds silly- but darned if it doesn't work...

Match your step to your breath (not 'tother way round)- one step one breath (for steep stuff) two step one breath (normal stuff) three step one breath (downhill) seriously- takes your mind to your breath- not your feet- got me to 14,000+in a whole lotto snow.... inhale-step-exhale-step- soon you'll be doin' 6 mph and no-one will figure out "why".... then you can tell them it was the Wheaties...
