Yesterday,in physical therapy, I told my therapist that on a previous day I had gotten up to about two miles an hour on the treadmill at the rehab center. I've noticed that when you say things like this to her she gets this crazy look in her eye. She seems to be thinking, "Oh, yeah? You wanna race?" This was in fact pretty close to what she really had in mind.
Within a few minutes, I was back on that treadmill and she was zooming it up to 2.5 mph. (OK, this may not sound like much but when I first got on a treadmill about two weeks ago, I only managed about 1.2 mph with difficulty.) The big difference? I'm just taking longer strides. We worked quite a bit on stretching and preparing me to take bigger steps and it really paid off.
So how do I know that this is the current speed limit? Last night and most of the day today I was completely wiped out. I had planned on going out for a walk today but as I slowly and painfully climbed the stairs this morning after answering the front door, I realized that this was a day to lay low and recuperate. After all, I've got to get back on that treadmill tomorrow.
